Key highlights on regulations, policies, and program funding for the transportation professional
The Wisconsin Traffic Operations & Safety (TOPS) Laboratory and FHWA are hosting a series of trainings on Traffic Incident Management (TIM) for first responders, contractors, and field engineers.
These two-hour instructor-led webinars focus on the best practices for prevention, response, and follow-up involving Work Zone Traffic Incident Management (WZ TIM). Dealing with motor vehicle crashes or similar incidents in a highway construction zone requires the combined skills of many people including police, fire, emergency medical services, highway agency, and contractor personnel.
WZ TIM is more complicated than ordinary TIM because access to the incident site is often difficult, there is limited space for response operations, and there are more organizations to coordinate. Response can be hampered by the combined effect of incident traffic backups and construction closures.
These webinars take place on the following dates:
Traffic Incident Management in Work Zones: Training for Contractors & Field Engineers
Traffic Incident Management in Work Zones: Training for First Responders
Traffic Incident Management (TIM) consists of a planned and coordinated multi-disciplinary process to detect, respond to, and clear traffic incidents so that traffic flow may be restored as safely and quickly as possible.
Effective TIM reduces the duration and impacts of traffic incidents; improves the safety of motorists, crash victims, and emergency responders; and reduces the frequency of secondary crashes.
TIM is integral to the USDOT National Roadway Safety Strategy (NRSS), and is specifically called out as a key element for the post-crash care objective.
"There can be no doubt that the transportation sector is the most critical sector of our economy."
