As experienced leaders and subject matter experts approach retirement, how will organizations retain critical knowledge, management skills, and continue striving for improvement?
The California Local Technical Assistance Program (CALTAP) and the Caltrans Division of Local Assistance (DLA) are offering two free virtual Lunch 'n Learn sessions designed to help you build and implement effective succession planning strategies.
SESSION 1 covers planning fundamentals including investing in key demographics, enhancing employee buy-in, ensuring transparency, and budgeting for succession planning resources. SESSION 2 focuses on implementation strategies such as developing guidebooks, building pools of future leaders, creating cross-training and job-shadowing programs, and establishing consistent outreach and messaging.
Both sessions draw upon best practices from "The Developing Succession Planning Capacity Within Caltrans," a research project that reviewed successful approaches from multiple state DOTs. Administrators, supervisors, managers, leaders, and future leaders across all public works sectors are invited to attend.

— Robert Brady
