Inspecting for Traffic Sign Retroreflectivity

Posted: 8/4/2025

TRAINING: October 8, 2025, 6:00AM - 9:00AM PT

The West Virginia LTAP (WV LTAP) is hosting a free 3-hour webinar on traffic sign retroreflectivity.

Since drivers cannot see as many visual cues at night as they can during the day, this places greater reliance on signs and other traffic control devices. To provide nighttime sign visiblity, signs are made using retroreflective sheeting. Retroreflectivity is the property of a material that re-directs light back to the originating source.

To comply with sign retroreflectivity requirements in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), public agencies need to implement and then continue to use an assessment or management method that is designed to maintain traffic sign retroreflectivity at or above the minimum levels specified.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understanding MUTCD Sign Retroreflectivity Requirements
  • Traffic Sign Assessment & Management Compliant with MUTCD

Instructor:

  • Ron Eck, P.E., Professor Emeritus, West Virginia University

This workshop is aimed at roadway agency personnel who install and maintain signs and who want to learn more about the assessment methods that can be used to comply with the MUTCD retroreflectivity requirements.
