Key highlights on regulations, policies, and program funding for the transportation professional

NCHRP July Research Roundup

Posted: 8/4/2025

TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) has released several new reports covering topics relevant to local road transportation professionals, including cementitious concrete, resilient culvert design, stormwater program management, and traffic volume data capture.

To fulfill one of its oldest missions, TRB disseminates transportation research results and technology information through an extensive array of publications. These include books and reports assessing the state of the art or practice in specific areas of transportation, presenting the results of transportation research, addressing major national transportation policy issues, and identifying research needs. TRB books and reports span the range of transportation functions, disciplines, and modes.

More specifically, NCHRP reports address common problems faced by state DOTs and other transportation agencies by providing research-based solutions and guidance on various aspects of highway planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance. Below is list of recently published titles.

Recently Published Reports:

Practices to Enhance Resiliency of Existing Roadway & Embankment Culverts

  • NCHRP Synthesis 651 documents management and maintenance practices used by state DOTs to enhance resiliency of existing roadway and embankment culverts.

Use of Supplementary Cementitious Materials for Concrete

  • NCHRP Synthesis 656 documents state DOT practices for specifying and using Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCM) in concrete.

Construction Stormwater Program Management, Tracking, Reporting, & Compliance

  • NCHRP Synthesis 648 shares state DOT tools and practices for managing compliance with state and federal construction stormwater permit requirements.

Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Model

  • NCHRP Research Report 1151 explores how to improve climatic inputs and related models that transportation agencies can implement.

Leveraging Existing Traffic Signal Assets to Obtain Quality Traffic Counts

  • NCHRP Web-Only Document 436 provides agencies with information about extracting motorized and non-motorized traffic volume data from existing traffic signal assets.

Limiting Damage to Flexible & Composite Pavements due to the Presence of Water

  • NCHRP Web-Only Document 433 presents successful practices in minimizing adverse effects of moisture on flexible and composite pavement structures at all stages of pavement life, including design, construction, maintenance, preservation, and rehab.

Who is NCHRP?

The National Cooperative Highway Research Program conducts research in problem areas that affect highway planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance in the United States.

Administered under the Transportation Research Board (TRB), NCHRP is a collaborative effort between the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the National Academy of Sciences.

TRB Cooperative Research Program

The mission of the Transportation Research Board's (TRB) Cooperative Research Program (CRP) is to promote innovation and progress in transportation through research.

CRP seeks/shares knowledge that helps us tackle our nation’s toughest transport challenges: those we face today and those we'll likely face tomorrow.
