Key highlights on regulations, policies, and program funding for the transportation professional
The Maritime Administration (MARAD) has extended the application deadline for its Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) to September 10, 2025.
PIDP provides funding on a competitive basis for projects that improve the safety, efficiency, or reliability of the movement of goods into, out of, around, or within a port.
PIDP grants support efforts by ports and industry stakeholders to improve port and related freight infrastructure to meet the nation’s freight transportation needs and ensure our port infrastructure can meet anticipated growth in freight volumes. The program provides funding to ports in both urban and rural areas for planning and capital projects, and includes a statutory set-aside for small ports to continue to improve and expand their capacity to move freight reliably and efficiently and support local and regional economies.

Federal cost-share for PIDP is 80%, but the Secretary of Transportation may increase
this for grant projects located in rural areas or small projects at small ports
The Maritime Administration (MARAD) supports the technical aspects of America's maritime transportation infrastructure, including ships & shipping, port & vessel operations, national security, environment, and safety.
MARAD promotes the use of waterborne transportation and ensures its infrastructure integrates seamlessly with other methods of transportation.
