UC Berkeley's Safe Transportation Research & Education Center (SafeTREC) is accepting applications for programs to improve walking, biking, and rolling in our communities.

Available Programs Include:

• Community Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety Program (CPBSP)
  CPBSP looks to reduce bike & ped fatalities and serious injuries in communities across California by prioritizing work in those at a disproportionate risk for road traffic injuries, and by addressing the safety needs those underserved by traditional transportation resources and planning, such as older adults, people with lower incomes, and those with disabilities. For early consideration, apply by Wednesday, December 19, 2025.
  
  
• Complete Streets Safety Assessments (CSSA)
  CSSA is a comprehensive transportation safety assessment that focuses on ped and bike safety. By participating, your community will gain expert insights into designing and implementing traffic safety solutions that protect all road users. CSSAs are free and available to California's city, county, or tribal agencies and public universities. Applications are due January 23rd, 2026.
  
  
• California Safe System Institute for Road Safety
  This Institute is a Safe System Approach (SSA) training and technical support program that will train participants in the Safe System framework, provide collaborative opportunities within the inaugural cohort, and create tangible next steps for institutionalizing SSA in your organization. Applications open early 2026.
  
  

SafeTREC Office Hours

The SafeTREC team is launching virtual office hours this year to better support those interested in applying to one or more of their programs. Are you interested in applying but unsure which program best fits your needs? Join them at an upcoming office hours session via Zoom to hear about each program and ask questions.

Two office hours events are planned during the application period, one during lunch and the other after work to provide flexibility for all applicants.
