RSCP 2026: Overview of the MUTCD

Posted: 1/23/2026

TRAINING: February 3, 2026, 10:00AM - 12:00PM PT

Explore the foundation of safe, standardized roadways with Overview of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). This course is presented by the National Center for Rural Road Safety (NCRRS) as part of this season's Road Safety Champion Program (RSCP), a nationally recognized certificate program that shapes a knowledgeable, safety-minded workforce for local roads.

The MUTCD defines the standards for how traffic signs, road surface markings, and signals are designed, installed, and used on all public streets, highways, bikeways, and private roads open to public traffic. We'll also discuss why traffic control devices need to be uniform across locations and how standardization supports safer roadways nationwide.

This 2-hour course is the fourth in a 7-part series of online training. The series covers many of RSCP's career-focused modules. Each 2-hour session is free to attend. Completion goes towards your requirements to become RSCP-certified. These courses may be taken out-of-turn and completed any time in the future when available.

RSCP is open to all staff from transportation, public health, and law enforcement agencies who have an interest in roadway safety but are not safety experts.

Training Objectives:

  • MUTCD and its role in standardizing traffic control devices nationwide
  • Uniformity in traffic control devices across different locations/jurisdictions
