Land-Use Audit for Walkability

Posted: 1/23/2026

TRAINING: January 27, 2026, 11:00AM - 12:00PM PT [CLOSED]

America Walks is hosting "A Land-Use Audit for Walkability," a free webinar exploring the best land-use changes a community can make that, when paired with safe street design, create walkable places accessible to all.

Creating walkable communities requires more than just safe street design—it demands thoughtful land-use policies that bring destinations within reach. It's natural to focus on improving streets for walkability through better sidewalks and crosswalks, however even the most beautifully designed streets fall short if there's nowhere meaningful to walk to.

This America Walks webinar addresses how land-use policies and zoning reforms can extend the benefits of walkability to more people.

Webinar Topics:

  • How land use and walkability are connected through zoning & development patterns
  • Which land-use indicators are most correlated with walkable environments
  • What specific policies make places less walkable
  • Actionable steps for state and local governments

Presenters:

  • Cary Westerbeck, Architect, Advocate, and Infill Developer
  • Mike McGinn, Advocate, Lawyer, and Former Seattle Mayor

This webinar offers valuable insights for urban planners, public health officials, transportation professionals, and community advocates interested in creating more walkable, accessible communities.
