Applying the Safe System Approach for Rural

TRAINING: January 28, 2026, 8:00AM - 1:30PM PT

The National Center for Rural Road Safety (NCRRS) is hosting a virtual mini-conference on the Safe System Approach, consisting of 3 separate 1.5-hour sessions spaced 30 minutes apart. Sessions will cover Applying the Safe Systems Approach for Rural, Safer Road Users in the Rural Context, and Safer Roads in the Rural Context.

Session Topics:

Overview on Applying the Safe System Approach for Rural (8–9:30am PT)

  • The Safe System Approach from the traditional & the public health pyramid perspective
  • Traffic safety culture and how to apply the Positive Cultural Framework
  • Implementing the Safe System Approach at the organizational level

Safer Road Users in the Rural Context (10–11:30am PT)

  • How to implement a rural focused program for safer road users
  • Promising practices for preventing impaired driving in rural areas
  • Inspiring people in rural communities to better understand road safety improvements

Safer Roads in the Rural Context (12–1:30pm PT)

  • How to use FHWA’s Safe System Approach Design Hierarchy for the rural context
  • Understanding self-explaining road design in suburban/rural facility transition zones
  • Using crash data and kinetic energy principles to prioritize intersections for safety
