Road Safety Projects in Rural Areas

Posted: 2/16/2026

WEBINAR: February 26, 2026, 10:00AM - 12:00PM PT

The first in a new series of FHWA webinars, Accelerate Delivery of Road Safety Projects in Rural Areas: Successful Implementation of Modular Designs & Materials brings together state DOTs and local agencies to highlight successful projects that use modular designs and materials to advance road safety and highlight policies supporting accelerated delivery of road safety projects.

Presentations will focus on installing a modular roundabout on a state rural road, implementing modular pedestrian crossings on local roadways, and delivering a program to implement modular safety projects as part of maintenance.

In 2023, 41% of roadway fatalities occurred in rural areas despite only 20% of the population living in rural America. To help address this, FHWA is launching its 2026 Rural Road Safety Webinar Series, which will feature presentations and panels on innovative and effective practices that save lives on America’s rural roads.

Transportation professionals working in state, regional, local, and tribal transportation agencies will learn how to implement proven and promising strategies, tools, and technologies that accelerate delivery of effective and innovative safety projects and programs to advance a Safe System for all users in rural areas.

Roundabouts

A roundabout is an intersection with a circular configuration that safely and efficiently moves traffic.

Roundabouts feature channelized, curved approaches that reduce vehicle speed, entry yield control that gives right-of-way to circulating traffic, and provide a counterclockwise flow around a central island that minimizes conflict points.

The net result of lower speeds and reduced conflicts at roundabouts is an environment where crashes that cause injury or fatality are substantially reduced.
