Posted: 2/27/2026

TRAINING: March 4, 2026, 10:00AM - 11:30AM PT

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Traffic Operations & Safety (TOPS) Laboratory and Iowa State University Institute for Transportation (InTrans) present Connected Work Zone 101, a free introductory training on work zone event data and connected device integration.

This webinar, supported by FHWA Work Zone Safety Grants, is the first module in a two-part series based on the Work Zone Data Exchange (WZDx) specification.

The session introduces the 2024 Connected Work Zones Implementation Guide & Standard v1.0.0, focusing on the fundamentals of connected work zone data management. As transportation agencies increasingly integrate technology into work zone operations, understanding standardized data exchange becomes essential for improving safety, reducing delays, and enabling connected and automated vehicle navigation through construction zones. This training provides essential foundational knowledge for agencies working to modernize work zone operations.

Topics Covered:

  • Connected Work Zone Data & Why it Matters
  • CWZ Data Exchange Standard (formerly WZDx)
  • CWZ Background & Objectives
  • Overview of the CWZ Work Zone & Device Feeds
  • Real-World Examples & WZDx Registry
  • Making the Case for CWZ

This training is designed for agencies beginning their journey into connected work zone data management and device integration, as well as those seeking a refresher on foundational concepts. Transportation professionals involved in work zone planning, traffic management, intelligent transportation systems, and construction operations will benefit from this session.

Instructors:

  • Steven Parker, UW-Madison TOPS Laboratory

Iowa LTAP

Iowa Local Technical Assistance Program, operated by Iowa State Institute for Transportation, provides training and tech support to local public agencies across Iowa, helping them improve their transportation systems.

Connected Work Zones

The Connected Work Zones (CWZ) data exchange framework enables consistent communication to motorists, connected vehicles, and transportation management systems, providing a structured way to share real-time work zone location, activity, and device data.

CWZ standardization improves safety, reduces delays, and supports navigation systems in guiding drivers through construction zones safely and efficiently.
