Bridge Preservation through Coatings

Posted: 3/9/2026

TRAINING: March 26, 2026, 9:00AM - 10:00AM PT

The National Center for Pavement Preservation's (NCPP) Bridge Preservation Partnership (BPP) Local Agency program presents a free virtual training on Bridge Maintenance Painting, specifically designed to teach local agencies the basics of steel bridge maintenance through coatings.

The training explains how agencies can maintain their own structures with in-house crews, and provides options that could delay the need for total removal and replacement of the existing coating system — and the high costs associated with those types of projects. A coating system is the first line of defense in protecting a steel structure.

Session Highlights:

  • Why maintenance painting is important for steel bridge preservation
  • How to identify potential candidate structures for maintenance painting
  • Understanding the level of cleaning needed for maintenance painting
  • Selecting the appropriate coating system for the structure
  • Required equipment to perform the work
  • How agencies can maintain structures with in-house crews to reduce costs
