Back to Basics: Roundabouts

Posted: 4/6/2026

WEBINAR: April 14, 2026, 11:00AM - 12:30PM PT

The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) is hosting a 1.5-hour webinar providing a foundational overview of modern roundabout design and operations.

Modern roundabouts are increasingly being used across the U.S. to improve safety, reduce delay, and enhance intersection performance. However, confusion often remains regarding the differences between roundabouts, traffic circles, and rotaries, as well as when and why roundabouts are the preferred design solution.

This introductory webinar provides a foundational overview of modern roundabout design and operations. Participants will learn how roundabouts differ from older circular intersection forms, explore key geometric and operational characteristics, and review documented safety and mobility benefits. The session will also address common public misconceptions and discuss practical considerations for implementation.

Presenters:

  • Myles Overall, PE, Graduate Research Assistant, Purdue University
  • Wyatt Brown, Traffic EIT, HDR
  • Jordan Pike, PE, PTOE, Lead, Transportation Services, HEB Engineers

 Learning Objectives:

  • Differentiate between modern roundabouts, traffic circles, and rotaries
  • Explain how modern roundabout design elements contribute to improved safety
  • Evaluate when a roundabout may be an appropriate alternative to a signalized or stop-controlled intersection, based on safety and operational considerations
