Next Generation Pedestrian & Bicycle Projects

Posted: 4/6/2026

WEBINAR: April 15, 2026, 12:00PM - 1:00PM PT

The Association of Pedestrian & Bicycle Professionals (APBP) presents Establishing Massachusetts Next Generation of Pedestrian & Bicycle Projects, a webinar showcasing how the Massachusetts DOT (MassDOT) is using geospatial analysis to identify infrastructure gaps and prioritize future pedestrian and bicycle projects.

MassDOT has established an overarching statewide goal in expanding a high comfort network for pedestrians and bicyclists to all applicable state roadways that are within the range of a short walking or biking trip. In order to be realized, this goal requires the planning, prioritization, design and construction of high comfort pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure.

This study involved several main components:

  • Establishing a "Recommended Infrastructure" for pedestrians and bicycles
  • Identifying gaps in existing bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure
  • Prioritizing gap segments by highest need for infrastructure improvements
  • Creating a "Vision Map" access to high comfort pedestrian and bicycle facilities

The result of this analysis is a roadmap of recommended bike & ped infrastructure projects for the foreseeable future, to help the state achieve its transportation vision.

Presenters:

  • Richard Plenge, Active Transportation Service Leader, VHB
  • Pete Sutton, State Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator, MassDOT
  • Pedro Hernandez, Capital Programs, Bike & Ped Program Manager, MassDOT
