Key highlights on regulations, policies, and program funding for the transportation professional
The Urban Greening Grant Program allocates approximately $100M for projects that use nature-based solutions to mitigate climate change impacts such as the urban heat island effect, rising temperatures, and extreme heat.
Urban Greening projects use nature-based solutions—planting trees that provide strategic shade, expanding green spaces that serve as places of refuge during heat waves, and creating green streets and alleyways that capture and clean stormwater—to help communities become more climate resilient.
Successful projects will green and cool communities and offer multiple benefits including sequestering carbon, limiting stormwater runoff, providing habitat and preserving biodiversity, protecting public health during extreme heat, increasing equity, and expanding economic and workforce opportunities.
Funded projects are expected to advance the goals of the state's Extreme Heat Action Plan and Nature-Based Solutions Climate Targets. Funding is provided through California's voter-approved Climate Bond (Prop 4) and will be awarded in two competitive cycles, with $46,125,000 available in the first round.
California's 2024 Prop 4 Climate Bond invests $10B in local projects that strengthen communities by protecting drinking water, reducing wildfire & flood risks, restoring natural places, supporting healthy working lands, and expanding access to parks & outdoor spaces.
"There can be no doubt that the transportation sector is the most critical sector of our economy."
— Robert Brady
