The National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) has released Research Report 1174 Preparing the Transportation Workforce for Emerging Technologies to address recruitment, development, and retention of a workforce proficient in developing and deploying complex emerging technology.
The rapid pace of technological advancements is changing how people and goods move through communities. The transportation workforce is adapting to the expansion of emerging technologies that have raised awareness of challenges that are inhibiting the industry’s ability to efficiently and effectively leverage their value.
Although every transportation agency’s strategy for workforce adaptation is unique, there is a widely acknowledged need for additional resources that can support decision-making, promote continued investment, and focus training efforts to better prepare the industry’s workforce.
This guide is designed to help enhance the agility, adaptability, and preparedness of transportation agencies to bolster their workforce’s resiliency to change and enable the capitalization of benefits offered by emerging technologies
Also available is NCHRP Web-Only Document 445 Preparing the Transportation Workforce for Emerging Technologies: Developing a Guide, which describes the phases of the project that resulted in NCHRP Research Report 1174.
