Introduction to Active Transportation Planning & Design

This 1-day Introduction to Active Transportation Planning & Design course presented live in San Diego, CA, introduces planning and design concepts to planners, engineers, public health practitioners, community-based organizations, and other active transportation champions with little or no experience.

Participants will explore tools used to assess and evaluate the suitability of transportation infrastructure for use by all types of bicyclists and pedestrians, learn about California’s commitment to support all modes of transportation, and receive an overview of basic pedestrian and bicycle planning and design standards, guidance, and tools.

In addition to this September session, a second in Sacramento is also being offered.

Training Schedule/Locations:

  • September 24, 2026 — Scripps Mercy Hospital, San Diego (9am to 4pm)
  • October 1, 2026 — Caltrans Headquarters, 1120 N Street, Sacramento (9am to 4pm)

The California Active Transportation Program (ATP) is a state-funded initiative administered by Caltrans to encourage an increased use of walking and biking.

Since inception, ATP has funded over 800 active transportation projects across the state to benefit both urban and rural areas, with over 400 Safe Routes to Schools programs promoting a healthy and active student lifestyle.
