Using Human Factors Guidelines for Road Systems

Posted: 8/6/2026

WEBINAR: August 19, 2026, 8:00AM - 9:30AM PT

This 90-minute webinar explores how the recently released NCHRP Research Report 1148 Human Factors Guidelines for Road Systems can help transportation professionals design safer roadways by accounting for the abilities and limitations of road users.

Presenters discuss the relationship between roadway design, human factors, and traffic safety, demonstrate how to navigate and apply the NCHRP guide, and share a practitioner case study illustrating how the guidance has been used to support safety analyses and roadway design decisions in Washington state.

Hosted by the Transportation Research Board (TRB), this webinar showcases how to reduce the likelihood of user error by designing systems, tasks, and environments that take inherent, relatively stable human capabilities and limitations into account.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the ways in which road user errors lead to crashes
  • Learn how the guide can decrease the demands placed on road users
  • Summarize the purpose, layout, and contents of the guide
  • Identify ways to use guide in day-to-day activities

Presenters:

  • John Campbell, Exponent
  • Liberty Hoekstra-Atwood, Exponent
  • Ida van Schalkwyk, Washington State DOT

Complimentary registration is available for employees of TRB sponsors, standing technical committee chairs, involved CRP panel members, tribal government employees, media, congressional staff, & TRB or National Academies staff.
